Dear Ellbee,
I keep reading about “statement” coats. What exactly does that mean? And will I be able to afford one?!
Thank you!
Marcie
Dear Marcie,
Like you, I’ve seen several references to the “statement coat” for fall. The good news is it does not necessarily translate to “designer label.”
A statement coat is simply a stand-out coat. Think bright colors, specialty cuts and distinctive details.
Traditional jacket, trench and overcoat designs are most commonly manufactured in beiges, browns, blacks and grays. Seek out something that sets you apart from the sea of neutral. ~ Find one done in emerald green, bright pink or cobalt blue, and you’ll have successfully caught the trend in this year’s “it” colors.
Fitted lady-like coats are a good choice for every shape and size. Jessica Simpson offers some lovely options, reasonably priced.
Oversized pieces with a “menswear” feel are ideal for women of stature (5’8” or more). Harve Bernard features several smart woolens, moderately priced.
If you’re feeling especially adventurous, look for a swing coat or cape. These pieces have marvelous movement and can bring serious drama to your look. If you are petite, look for solid brights, a tiny check or interesting woven textures. If you are tall, go for big, bold plaids or a generous houndstooth.
Unique details can make any piece special. Oversized collars and exaggerated cuffs can be fun, as long as they don’t look too costumed.
Toggles, clip closures and ornate buttons can draw the eye, as well. And, of course, pretty trims and bold piping offer a more refined way to stand out.
Always look for quality finishing details (a nice lining, secure hems) and check labels to ensure your coat can go the distance. Visit your local department store to get a feel for the pieces that might be right for you. Then check discount boutiques such as SteinMart and TJ Maxx for affordable higher-end options.
