Yes, every woman should have a long seasonal coat with classic lines in a nice neutral at the ready. But try changing things up with a fetching wrap, smart cape, or sassy poncho. You’ll stay warm and look effortlessly chic with the added bonus of camouflaging any problem areas.
I visited a few local department stores last week to see what they had to offer beyond the coat. The style selection was impressive. The fabric, weight and color options were equally inspiring. There were heavy wools, luxe velvets, soft fleeces and lighter satiny crepe fabrics, too. Neutrals were plentiful — but so were deep jewel tones, bright primaries, festive metallics and some very on-trend animal prints.
I tried on a cozy cashmere wrap with tiny bugle bead accents. Understated elegance. Then I pulled on a woolen cape with brass grommet trim. Adorably sweet. A chunky knit poncho with long fringe at the hem was next. Pure retro fun.
After perusing a few more racks, I found a gorgeous chocolate brown ruana. I knew even before I tried it on it would be mine. It was ridiculously plush; the cut was so generous, I felt like I was wrapped in a comfy blanket. But it sure didn’t look like it. The brushed material was rich; and the attached faux fur neck scarf lent a sophisticated look and an all-important long vertical line. I wore it out.
Winter officially begins in five weeks. But those of us who enjoy the seasons for fashion reasons know it actually kicked off right after Halloween. So get out there and grab a little something beyond the coat.
