Ask Ellbee ~ Dry Skin

Dear Ellbee,

I’m having problems with my skin.  I’m dry and flaky and itchy all over.  The dryness is occasionally an issue in the winter, but usually clears up by spring.  Not this time.  Plus I’m sort of red and splotchy.

I’ve been using Nivea Lotion before bed, but it’s not really doing much.  Any suggestions?

Thank you!
Lori

Hi, Lori.

I recommend a trip to the dermatologist for you.

Though weather changes can trigger skin problems of all kinds, that you are red and itchy suggests you may be having an allergic reaction of some sort.

Are you using new products on your face or body?  Or perhaps a harsh clarifying shampoo?  Is there a new laundry detergent in the house?  And is anyone else in the home having similar issues?

To relieve itchy skin, Ellbee recommends Aveeno Skin Relief Bath Treatment with Colloidal Oatmeal

Call your doctor to schedule an appointment.

In the meanwhile, relieve your symptoms with a simple soak in a full bath of warm (not hot) water and 1/2 cup of baking soda. Or use a fragrance-free OTC colloidal oatmeal (avena sativa) bath.

Relax in the tub for 15 minutes, then gently pat your skin dry with a clean towel. Seal in moisture with a basic fragrance-free lotion.

Even if you are using sunscreen, stay out of the sun until you resolve this issue with your dermatologist, Lori.

Hope you are soon on the mend!
Ellbee
